Have you ever listened to a song and could just feel the exact vibe that takes you to such a specific location? As if you are daydreaming and you can envision a time and place with a soundtrack in the background. Let me take you where my mind is.
You’re on a train ride through the mountains. Mid fall weather and you have a cozy sweater on. The leaves have already changed and began falling all over the ground. You have a book that brings you comfort in one hand and a nice warm cup of coffee in the other. It’s just after sunrise and your day is starting slow but peacefully.
That’s exactly the scene that’s playing in my mind while I listen to The Droughts debut EP, CHROME. The alternative rock band from Salt Lake City just released their first five song EP on all streaming platforms. Although the scenery the songs put me in is peaceful, the lyrics are very deep and charged with sadness. The songs go on a journey of grieving who someone once was to you, losing them, and figuring out how to continue on your own. Whether it’s figuratively losing a person or literally is up for interpretation, but the symbolism remains the same. It doesn’t even have to be about another person, it could be grieving who you once were yourself. As we grow older, our lives are ever-changing. Although we might be in a better place, it’s natural to grieve a life that you once had. Coping with loss is a feeling that never gets easier and is expressed beautifully through these songs.
“Line by line, word by word. When is it going to start to burn?”
Depression and anxiety often present themselves in doubt. When things are going good there’s always that haunting voice that is just waiting for the shoe to drop and everything to come crumbling down. What’s worse is when it does fall apart, you have to face the harsh reality of continuing on. While these songs are deep introspective on life, the musicality is peaceful. With strong bass lines and creative drum patterns, the songs are ethereal.
